The Number 42
Sixty-five years ago (1947) Jackie Robinson stepped out of the Brooklyn Dodgers dugout and became the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues. There was a lot of hate, even some of Robinson’s own teammates refused to play alongside him, but Robinson maintained silently and went on to become “Rookie of the Year”, and thanks to his bravery, one of the most important athletes in American history. In 1997, Major League Baseball retired his uniform number, 42.
